LHS students spent the week of National Lutheran Schools Week (NLSW) “Connecting” with one another based on John 15:1-5. During chapel, members of the Service Club presented a few skits from “Vines University” that reminded us how important it is to stay Connected to God and to Connect with people who can help us grow in our faith. Michelle Zollinger, the President of the LA-MS District of the LWML and Gladys Brown, New Orleans Zone President, made a special presentation at the end of Chapel. At last year’s National LWML Convention, Lutheran High was selected to receive a grant funded by the LWML’s mite boxes. LHS plans to use this grant to help us increase enrollment. On Thursday of NLSW, students connected by wearing their favorite color and enjoyed a special lunch prepared by Ms. Loughmiller and the Service Club. Partner challenges saw students “Connecting” puzzles, paper clips, pasta, and more. The day ended with a baby shower to “Connect” to the newest member of our Gryphon family – Cristian Artiz (the son of Mr. Artiz and his wife Cristina). Junior students, accompanied by Mrs. Lagarde and Mr. Scriber, toured Nicholls University to learn more about the many opportunities and degree programs available. Thank you to Kirsten Hill for the wonderful tour and admissions presentation. We also met a recent LHS alum on his way to class at Nicholls. After a taste of college life at the student dining hall, students enjoyed a VIP interactive tour of the mass communications department. Students were on the news, live on the radio, learned about student journalism, and even "flew" a drone. Thank you to Professor Lance Arnold and staff for making our visit so fun and memorable! In celebration of Black History Month, students in Mrs. Lagarde's art classes learned more about Jean-Michel Basquiat, a modern neoexpressionist artist. Basquiat's artwork dealt with themes of racism, classism, and other power structures and their effects on U.S. society. Students created their own works inspired by Basquiat. Great job, Gyphons! Early morning on Saturday, February 24th, 36 Lutheran High students, accompanied by Mrs. Lagarde and Ms. Loughmiller, traveled to Southeastern University in Hammond to compete in the Louisiana District Literary Rally. Students took academic tests in specific subjects and competed with other New Orleans area schools in our division. Art students entered artworks in specific categories and were judged against all participating New Orleans schools within that category. All enjoyed the Rock-N-Roar event sponsored by Southeastern University which included food booths, face painting, games, activities, and informative booths detailing the many academic and social aspects of college life. While academic scores are not yet official, four art students placed in their individual art competition categories at the District level! Congratulations to all of our students for representing us so well at Southeastern today. #GryphonPride #WeAreLuHigh |
